Have you ever wondered why there’s such an epidemic of mental health issues / problems / dilemmas?
For most of us, our mental health is derived from our experiences which are derived from events, emotions and thinking. At it’s most basic, events have associated emotions and thoughts attached to them, the combination of which makes meaning – which becomes our experience.
Past experience can influence present emotion
Experience [whether real or imagined] can be good, bad or somewhere in between. Emotions can be triggered by doing or imagining the experience. Thoughts are formed according to the experience and the associated emotions.
That’s how it works and it can be changed. Say you’re booked to attend a networking event. You dread going, so you get yourself all anxious about it, until you convince yourself you’re too tired.
💫 If you’re thinking ‘I hate going to these events’ – all it mean is that you went to one before and hated it.
💫 If you start feeling anxious about going, all it means you went to one before and felt uncomfortable.
💫 If you really don’t want to go – all it means is that didn’t have a strategy for how to be last time.
That was then…
But that was then, this is now and It’s perfectly possible to alter your thoughts to create a different emotion around your experience of doing anything.
You just need to harness your inner grit and remind yourself how to do it.
